Siobhán's journey into heritage garden tourism began during her
undergraduate years at University College Dublin, where she
worked as a seasonal guide at Powerscourt Gardens while studying
horticulture. It's there she first noticed something important —
the traditional garden guides weren't built with older visitors
in mind.
After completing her heritage management qualifications at
Trinity College Dublin, she spent a decade as a garden
conservator with the Irish Gardens Trust. She documented
restoration projects across Wicklow and Tipperary estates,
getting to know the land intimately. But the real breakthrough
came when she started developing accessible tour routes
specifically for retirees.
That shift changed everything. She realized heritage gardens
could be experienced differently — not as tick-boxes on a
walking itinerary, but as places for contemplation and
discovery. Over 2,000 visitors have followed her through
Ireland's most significant demesnes. She's become known for her
meticulous knowledge of Mount Usher's woodland paths, Birr
Castle's demesne layouts, and the seasonal character of gardens
throughout Leinster.
What drives her work is straightforward: older adults deserve
garden experiences designed around their pace, not squeezed into
someone else's schedule.
